When it comes to building your own home, you want to make sure you create a design that will provide you with a comfortable and efficient home that meets your needs. There are a few key things you need to keep in mind when going through the home building process in order to end up with something you like in the end.
Key #1: Give Yourself Time to Plan Your Home
First, you need to make sure you give yourself enough time to design the home. Being on a tight schedule rarely works well. You need to give yourself time to generate your own ideas, work with an architecture on the designs, and then go over the designs with your builder.
Once the designs are in place, you will need to work with your builder to choose the materials for each part of your home, from the type of foundation you want it to have, to the level of insulation, to the flooring and countertop materials.
You also need to leave time for surveying the land and obtaining permits before the building can begin. The planning process can be time-consuming and can be much more enjoyable if you budget enough time for this part of the process. You don't want to rush the plans on something so important.
Key #2: Design with Furniture in Mind
As you work on your design, think about where you will place furniture in each room and what type of furniture you want in each room. Make sure you are making the rooms big enough to accommodate all the furniture you want to put in each room, as well as room to walk around the furniture.
Using design programs that allow you to add furniture to floorplans will allow you to see if your design will functionally work when you start adding the furniture and belongings to the layout.
Key #3: Be Sure to Plan for Storage Space
As you work on your design, be sure to go back over it and make sure you added enough storage space. All too often, homeowners wish they would have added more storage space to their home.
Start with the bedrooms, and make sure you are adding closets that are large enough to store clothing and other personal items. For your bathrooms, make sure you add enough cabinets for towels, personal beauty and self-care products, and cleaning products. You may want to add a cabinet in the hallway outside the bathroom for extra towels and linens.
Take your kitchen design and write what you would put in each drawer, and make sure you have enough space for all your kitchen appliances and accessories. Consider adding a pantry to your kitchen.
Then there is always extra items to store, like holiday decorations and sports equipment. Add space in the garage for storing these items.
Key #4: Plan for Accessibility
Finally, consider how accessible your home is. You never know how your future needs will change, so make sure all doorways are wide enough to accommodate mobility devices such as wheelchairs and walkers. You should also make sure you have a bathroom on the first floor of your home, so that anyone who comes over can easily access it.
When it comes to designing your home, be sure to give yourself enough time to work through the design process. As you design, be sure to make sure your floorplan contains enough storage and space for your furniture as well. Think ahead, and make sure your design is assessable for everyone.

Construction contractors have a very important job. They literally build the structures we live in, work in, and entertain ourselves in. They have control over how these spaces look, and also over how safe these spaces are. Some contractors lay flooring. Others install flooring. Some are generalists and do a bit of everything, from roofing to painting. When you start to understand the nature of a contractor's job, you start to really appreciate all of the buildings around you. It's that appreciation that we really hope shines through as we write this blog to share with you all, our loyal readers.
